02:11 pm - Soon I shall stop posting and go do childcare The BPS asks some leading psychologists to share, in 150 words, one nagging thing they still don't understand about themselves.
Melissa McEwan quotes this one:
"There's plenty I don't understand about myself, but nothing nags. Paradoxically, the deeper I got into neuropsychology the less interested I became in the details of my own inner workings. I'm not sure why. It certainly is not because I arrived at any great insight or understanding. I still experience the almost visceral sense of puzzlement over matters of brain, mind and selfhood that first drew me to the field. What happened, I think, was a shift – let's imagine a neural switch somewhere in the frontolimbic circuitry – from one preoccupying question, What am I? to another, What should I do? It left me less inclined to bother about self-understanding than to consider the value of things, moral and aesthetic. How best to live? But here's a nagging thought: might those two preoccupying questions turn out to be one and the same, like the evening star and the morning star?" 01:21 pm - Public post, feel free to point people at it I thought I'd make a quick note about BiCon room/flat allocating, because I suspect people don't always think about how it works in practice. I'm describing it as me doing the allocations, but obviously it'd be the same whoever was doing it. ( Read more... ) Current Mood: contemplative

02:44 pm - Public post Well, after some thought about anti-BNP stuff, I have decided that one thing I can do relatively easily is to advertise my lack of support for them. Since I already have a teeshirt shop that I haven't done much with yet, I have created some 'I Hate the BNP' teeshirts and bought one for myself. Other people are more than welcome to do the same (I haven't put a commission on them so the price is just what Spreadshirt charges.) Some of the teeshirts allow you to change the text, by the way.
I was vaguely thinking about doing another teeshirt saying something like 'Hurray for Immigration' but I'm not sure exactly what the wording should be.
(I'm not saying this is all I should do, or that it will achieve much, but public anti-BNP stuff is at least something.)
ETA: have added shirts saying IMMIGRANT and WE ARE ALL IMMIGRANTS. Current Location: leaving soon to pick up H

08:23 am - Public post I'm not going to the bi activism weekend, but in case it's useful to anyone who is, a quick list of what I think a London BiFest venue should be like:( Read more... )
In my opinion Doggett's fulfils most or all of the above and I don't think anything better is likely to turn up, although I'm willing to look at options and even, if I have time, search for alternatives. Or someone else can run another event somewhere else with different priorities (e.g. a no-alcohol daytime-only event), as well as the current event. Current Mood: contemplative

02:18 pm - Public post
seph_hazard asked about what I've written and I thought I should put together a list with links where possible, but I keep putting it off. Brief summary below.
In total I've completed one novel, one full-length play, a couple of radio plays, a pilot episode for a sitcom, and a lot of short stories. Publications: some of the short stories and The Ladies Loos (which I co-edited), plus my play was given a reading at the Streatham Festival last year.
I am working on two other plays and another novel, and also writing a Christmas story for Holly, but this has not been a good year for creativity so everything's on hold. (Except the story for Holly, which I wrote this week and am halfway through.) Any of the above are available to read on request. Here's one of the stories I had published.

10:15 pm eBay's wholesale and clearance section is dangerous.
Do I want a thousand cocktail sticks? Do I want 12 dried baby ducks? Do I want 20 silk paintings, 18 tangerine candles, five tooth fairy cushions, 10 small grey vases with bamboo design, 20 handmade plantpot bristle pigs on sticks, 12 x 200g boxes of dream simmering granules, 24 pears made from dried plant material? Do I want 12 faux fur hanging horse cushions, 12 novelty egg candles, ten packs of elasticated food covers, 50 assorted kitchen knives, 12 plush heart fridge magnets, 48 fly killer pens, 12 pink poodle hooks, 60 peach toilet rolls, 12 glazed ceramic hens, 29 beer towels, or a job lot of four chain saws? Suddenly words make no sense any more.
I think Joe Orton would have loved eBay.

04:55 pm Worth doing every now and then: anyone have anything they want to say to me? Rare public post, comments screened but might be unscreened unless you ask me not to, no anon comments please (unless you sign them). I'm not guaranteeing answers but I'll try.
(Of course, the best thing about this is that with screened comments, none of you will know if nobody replies...) Current Mood: curious Current Music: Labyrinth on DVD
